Mason Greenwood scores Getafe’s second goal against Las Palmas

Mason Greenwood scored Getafe’s second goal in their home game against Las Palmas on Saturday evening by going round the goalkeeper to slot into an empty net.

The striker, on loan from Manchester United, was able to latch onto Diego Rico’s long pass to run and score past Alvaro Valles after 14 minutes.

While Getafe were 2-0 up, and then 3-1 up at the break, iconwin two second half goals from the visitors ensured the game finished all-square.

Jaime Mata had put Getafe ahead three minutes before Greenwood’s goal gave the hosts a two goal cushion at the Coliseum.

Sandro pulled one goal back for the visitors ten minutes before half-time, but Nemanja Maksimovic was able to restore Getafe’s two-goal lead before the break.

Las Palmas defender Sergi Cardona reduced the deficit for the visitors five minutes into the second half, before midfielder Munir levelled the scores in the 57th minute.

After six goals in the first hour, there were no further breakthroughs for either side, and the game finished 3-3.

Manchester United fans were quick to comment on Greenwood’s goal, particularly with their own frontline occasionally misfiring, particularly Antony.

One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): ‘He’s miles better than Antony’, while a second said: ‘Antony won’t score that’.

A third believed the Brazilian was ‘the kind of brother that will try and cut in for this exact situation’, rather than dispatching as clinically as Greenwood did.

‘This is who we need to replace Antony’, another said. ‘But my club will waste millions.’

Despite eventually winning the game against Luton Town 2-1, Man United’s forward line scuffed several chances similar to the one that Greenwood scored at the Coliseum, and fans were quick to point this out.

One wrote: ‘This is the same chance Bruno [Fernandes] and [Alejandro] Garnacho got against Luton ??’, while another said ‘Two of our players missed this in a single match’.

In September 2023, after Manchester United officials decided Greenwood’s immediate future lay elsewhere, he was able to secure a loan move to Getafe.

He has proven himself to be useful to his loan club, with the goal against Las Palmas his eighth goal since joining the club.

After his partial takeover of Man United was confirmed, Sir Jim Ratcliffe seemed to suggest that the club could bring him back, with the 22-year-old contracted until 2025.

However, it led to claims that Greenwood has no desire to return to Manchester United, as he felt the club failed to support him in the right fashion.

Getafe are looking to retain Greenwood’s services, either on loan or as a permanent signing

Getafe want to discuss keeping Greenwood, either by signing him permanently, or taking him on loan once again.

Getafe’s trip to Valencia and home league game against high-flying Girona are their remaining fixtures before the international break at the end of March.
