While the packing lists share many similarities, prolonged-term round-the-arena travelers frequently need to % do a few things you wouldn’t for an average adventure. Pack Boots or Walking Shoes?
Finding the right tour shoe is one of the most crucial packing picks you’ll make (locating the right backpack being the opportunity).
On my first lengthy-time trip (and for a few years after), I carried those New Balance hiking boots, and they had been so amazing that I changed them with a suitable identical pair of footwear once again. These flexible shoes labored well due to the reality they had been sufficiently solid to be characteristic as hiking boots for my trek in the Himalayas. However, they’re light enough to double as widespread shoes for regular sightseeing. They are the most snug and cushioned hiking shoes I have ever seen.
Pack Quality Socks
Get prepared for a fangirl rave about my love for SmartWool socks. It would help if you did not scrimp on suitable shoes since they’re crucial for long-term excursions, where blisters and poorly fitting footwear can ruin an enjoyable experience.
Socks are also crucial in fending off smelly toes syndrome.
Best Travel Sandals
On my long-term travels, I needed something versatile and durable, and there may be no better tour sandals than Chacos. You’ll meet many long-term tourists carrying these because they provide excellent arch aid and can be worn in various situations, from trekking through waterfalls to sightseeing in hot climes. (And they look way better than Tevas.)
Alongside my Chacos, I packed a couple of turn-flops to do the trick in hostel showers and casual conditions. Like with my pants concept—avoid color here; surely go along with black.
Prescriptions, Contacts, & Glasses
If you have been given prescriptions, carry a year’s supply or research wherein you may pinnacle on the road. Carry paper copies of your prescriptions, test them, and email them to yourself. It’s useless-smooth to get an eye-fixed exam and new contacts in Europe; however, it’s trickier if you don’t speak the local language.
Also, a few prescription pain meds are managed substances in countries with harsh drug regulations, so when you have any unusual prescriptions, research that beforehand. I carried a year’s worth of contacts with me (I wore –week throwaways), and I emerged as able to fill up touch answers on the road.
I additionally carried a pair of glasses and a hardshell case. Since I am significantly blind without my glasses, I scanned and emailed each of those prescriptions in case I became robbed or something else occurred—I’ve taken a couple of eye checks in an overseas language; it’s now not amusing. I additionally made sure my touch supply and glasses were never saved within the identical bag on journey days.
Water Bottle
I drink from a chrome steel Nalgene because I no longer drink from plastic; if you’re not fussed, you could go with a durable collapsible bottle. Either way, having your very own water bottle saves cash, is handy, and forestalls the overuse of plastic in global places with few powerful recycling packages.
Hat
Sun protection is not any shaggy dog story. This sun hat does the trick.
Adapters & Charging
If you’re visiting with a splendid amount of generation and if you’re in a couple, you have this to-be-had Belkin powhaveerstrip. In many instances, inns may also have just one outlet, so that is the way to ensure your camera, telephone, and device are all charged in the morning.
Computer
I delivered a computer because I had artwork from the road (more on that right here), and after 15+ years of touring, it’s no longer been stolen (knock on wood for me, will you?). I definitely have a MacBook Air now (I used to have a Dell PC).
Camera
I carry a Panasonic Micro Four-Thirds if I’m on a ride where I want to take great snapshots. Micro Four-Thirds (mirrorless) cameras are the very last tour cameras, and my comparison of my Panasonic explains why.
Even more, NatGeo mag named it a top adventure digital camera. These cameras are lovely. It’s almost to the extent of a DSLR (with removable lenses and everything). Still, at a minimum, it is half the size and weight of a conventional DSLR and, in an extended manner, more admirable photos than a component and shoot. There’s nothing wrong with a factor and shoot, though!
If you’re no longer into high-end photos and want something that works, upgrade your phone to the ultra-cutting-edge model and use it for snapshots—iPhones now take first-rate pics in sunlight and coffee moderately.
Backup Hard Drive
Depending on your journey, you probably want to supply a portable backup hard drive like this Western Digital Passport (what I carry) or the LaCie Rugged Electricity, which can address challenging adventures. Also, do not forget online data backup applications. I wrote an extensive article on how a Long-Term Traveler Can Back Up Heaps of Data.
Rechargeable Battery Pack
I conveyed a small backup battery delivery that charged me more on my mobile cell phone and a fee on my Kindle. Using your smartphone for navigation, sightseeing, or leisure on long bus rides will save you. I deliver one like this Anker battery percentage.
Kindle/Tablet
I’ve got my mind on this. I bring my Kindle Paperwhite anywhere, and I sincerely like it. I will no longer go away for a tour without my Kindle. I traveled with an iPad mini within the Beyond—it was all overkill, considering I am an adventurer with a computer. The most effective robust price I determined within the iPad was that my digital guidebook was some distance less complicated to navigate on the tablet than the Kindle.
